How we rank and score cutting machines
Every score on CraftGearGuide is a CraftGearGuide editorial score out of 10. It isn't an Amazon shopper score and doesn't use Amazon shopper reviews. It reflects research, not hands-on testing, unless a review says otherwise.
The rubric

Score anchors
- 9 to 10: exceptional for its class, with strong independent evidence and no significant limitations. No machine currently meets this.
- 8 to 8.5: a strong recommendation for most buyers in its class. Limits are clear and manageable.
- 7 to 7.5: a good choice for a specific buyer, with notable limits or thinner evidence.
- 6 to 6.5: usable, but with major compromises.
- Below 6: not recommended.
Evidence rules
- Scores use half-point steps. Our evidence doesn't support finer precision.
- A machine needs manufacturer specs and at least one independent hands-on source to be scored. Without that, it shows "Not scored" and verified specs only.
- A product has one overall score, and it's the same on every page. Category lists either sort by that score or explain a different, use-case order.
- We never change a score to make a ranking look tidy. We rescore when new evidence arrives and date the change.
- Earning a commission doesn't affect a score. Amazon buttons appear only where we've matched a listing to the machine. If the listing is a bundle, the button says so.

What we don't use
